писатель-модернист, основной мотив творчества - трагическое бессилие человека перед абсурдностью мира. Особой выразительности достигает в описании кошмаров и фантастических превращений. Буднично-протокольная манера письма Кафки сближает его с писателями "Новой вещественности". Действие обычно разворачивается на фоне природы Австро-Венгрии.
